Dear Anonymous, I’m in heated agreement with your sentiment and rationale, however, my post was not so much interested in the expansionary pursuits and travails of civilisations, but more about an individual’s ability to breach the gap of any encounter, provided there is enough incentive.

actually you’re wrong. It always did. Every single “modern day” empire, no matter how successful initially, had shrank back to roughly the same geographical borders it started from. Starting with Greeks, Romans, Mongols, Ottomans etc. And now with Spain, Britain and France and even Russia. No amount of blood or will was enough to overpower pure and simple geography. It is also stated as the first and main obstacle to longitudinal spreading of American-Indian empires, science, culture and language. Whereas it is also considered one of the main reasons why western empires were so relatively successful in their latitudinal conquest.
